Fight at The Crossroads

This is a map found in Sheridah Melvin's book Kudlyo the black swan dreaming: Veronica Brodie and the continuity of Kaurna history at Glanville and LeFevre Peninsula (Lartelare Homeland Association, 1994). I have yet to obtain a copy, but I note the intersection of Commercial Road and St Vincent St as a battleground...between white settlers and Kaurna people, or perhaps between different Kaurna groups. The map suggests that the site of the current Port was also the site of main camps and waterholes for Kaurna people prior to European arrival.

The intersection, and the strip from there down to the water, are the site of many Port Adelaide folklore stories. I made my own map, based on Google's template, to show the distribution of folkloric sites in the area. The map features in my forthcoming volume The Panther of Divett Street, a collection of Port Adelaide ghost tales and associated lore.
