Quick recap of today's trip to Rathlinn Island, my final adventure up here in Antrim before I go back to Belfast and prepare for Scotland.
A - It's stunning, mostly because it is full of upland lakes, which are now my favourite aspect of the landscape in Antrim. B - More archaeology, this time my first look at a real crannog (artificial island) rather than the reconstructed one I saw in County Clare. C - More giant folklore. Finn's wife made the island out of rocks she picked up after Finn's causeway idea went wrong. Good for her. Also, the Fomorian one-eyed giants lived here, and so did Robert Bruce, who fled here after being driven from Scotland. There is a famous banshee story here too, and, the Children of Lir lived around here for 300 years, after they got turned into swans, I didn't see any swans. Plenty of fulmars though. D - Yes there were puffins and razorbills here, but they have all gone now sorry. Sigh. E - I should have taken my bathers. F - Lots of people sound pretty Scottish up here. G - It was great and I walked most of it, covered about 10 miles. Tired again. In Australia my nemesis bird is the Singing Honeyeater - so many of my shots turn out to be of this bird. It the UK it is a bird called the Linnet, which I hadn't even heard of before. They seem to have just had a second brood so there are even more juveniles around to confuse me now. I spent much of today birding, but only got a few new species, and about eight Linnets. I hope my luck changes in Scotland because I am not going to make 100 at this rate. Comments are closed.
