In 2025, I will be walking this. Ticket booked.
The decision was largely influenced by my friend Anita, who lives on a restored coal barge very close to the Ivinghoe Beacon, in a town called Tring. Much of the walk past Wallingford is that close to her boat that I will be able to get a pickup back to the barge at the day's end, rather than seeking out a place to stay along the way. Many of the pubs along the way are called The Swan, they all look identical, and they all cost 90 pounds a night, which seems to be more in AUD every time I check. The Ridgeway is the oldest road in Europe, and once ran from Dorset to Norfolk, along the chalk ridge that dominates southern England. I've seen the White Horse and Wayland's Smithy before, and I wouldn't mind doing so again; this time, they'll be popping up out of the landscape along the trackway along which people drove carts for 3000 years. Wish me luck? Comments are closed.
